Hodgson Mill

At Hodgson Mill, our family is working hard to make food that’s the very best for your family. Our cold-grinding grain mill and “just in time” production creates healthy food full of all that nature intended. It’s about healthy food you can feel good sharing with your family - including organic and low fat foods full of fiber and whole grain nutrition. The company tradition that started back in 1882 with Alva Hodgson continues to inspire everything we do.

The way Hodgson Mill grinds grains today is not much different from the way it was back in 1882. We still mill the grain with stones, in a classic, time-honored way, retaining all of the healthy nutrients and wonderful flavor found in genuine stone ground, whole grain foods.

Stone Ground Goodness - How It Happens
Our whole grain foods start with only the very best grains. Our grain buyers seek out the highest No. 1 grade wheat, oats, rye, corn and other grains available on the market. Once it arrives at Hodgson Mill, the grain is cleaned twice before grinding. Cleaning involves the use of 1) a "separator" machine, which removes chaff, stalks and other plant material that remains after harvesting; and 2) an air-powered "aspirator" which takes out dust and any light and broken kernels: Only the plumpest, ripest grain berries make it through.

Next stop for the grain is the wheels of our millstones, cut and shaped specifically for milling from genuine North Carolina red granite. The grains flow gently down into the top of the mill and, in one simple operation, are ground between two stones into delicious whole grain flours and corn meals. This type of milling ensures that the grain’s nutritious germ, bran and natural oils are fully preserved. Stone-milling also gives the flour a distinct texture that makes your baked products more interesting, with greater eye-and-mouth appeal.

From there, the freshly ground grain goes directly to the packing line for one of our premium whole grain flours and meals, or is delivered right into mixers to be made into our delicious bread mixes, hot cereals, or other fine products. This immediate use of the milled grains gives our customers the freshest possible products ~ We call it our "Just in Time" production process.

Why Stone Grinding Matters
Hodgson Mill's products are considered premium quality because of the top-notch grains we use, as well as our special stone milling techniques. Each of our five stone mills produces only about 800 pounds of whole grain product an hour. That's not a lot when you compare us to giant commodity mills, but sometimes less is better. We take satisfaction in giving you, our customer, the best we can, and sometimes that just means taking a little more time.

"Just in Time" production is part of our commitment to provide customers the freshest and most flavorful products possible. At Hodgson Mill's state-of-the-art production facility, our stone-ground milling process is designed to get the milled grains directly from grinding into sealed packages or into one of our fine prepared foods, retaining every bit of flavor and freshness. Unlike other companies who grind larger batches of grains and store them for long periods in tote bags or other storage spaces, we won't let our milled grains sit while waiting to be mixed into different products or packaged.

As Hodgson Mill products are enjoyed by more and more people across the nation, we will continue to focus on premium quality ingredients and production, grinding our grains and making our products selectively in smaller batches. "Just in Time" production isn't easy to accomplish, and it may be a little less cost-efficient, but for the ultimate in freshness, flavor, and consistency, we believe it's well worth the effort.

Brandt Consolidated

Brandt Consolidated has been in the fertilizer business since Glen Brandt and Evelyn Brandt Thomas established Brandt Fertilizer in 1953. From the first location just west of New Berlin, Illinois, they have grown to 12 retail locations serving farmers in central Illinois. These locations are Pleasant Plains, Ashland, Virginia, New Berlin, Auburn, Oakford, Franklin, Greenview, Raymond, Lincoln, Galesville and Williamsville.

Brandt Consolidated also runs a Dealer Support Division providing crop nutrients to dealers throughout the Midwest. Dealer Support owns fertilizer terminals on the Illinois River in Meredosia and on the rail in Curran, Illinois.

Brandt Consolidated Specialty Products Division manufactures and distributes a full line of micronutrients, adjuvant and turf products throughout the United States and international markets.

Brandt Consolidated was created to help farmers adopt new, profitable technologies for their operations. In 1953, anhydrous ammonia and liquid fertilizer were “new” technologies introduced by Glen Brandt. Today we offer such new technology as auto guidance systems, insect resistant seed varieties and our High Q Decision Support System.

Service and knowledge are still the hallmarks of the business. Our people are the key to our outstanding customer service with 18 of our managers and salesmen holding a CCA designation. We invest in the training of our employees so they are knowledgeable of the latest technologies and can make the best recommendations for each of our customers.

“We are excited about the future of agriculture and our employees are ready to serve our customers in the U.S. and around the world,” says President and CEO, Rick Brandt.

Illinois State Fair - Illinois Products Promotion

Springfield, Illinois

Promote (and sell) your Illinois food products at the 2007 Illinois State Fair

Again this year, the Illinois Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Marketing & Promotion is coordinating “Illinois Products” food sampling and selling (selling is optional) during the 2007 Illinois State Fair. This year, the Illinois State Fair will be held August 10-19, 2007, in Springfield, IL. Up to eight companies can participate on each day.

Illinois food companies can sample and sell their products for any number of days that you choose. Your cost to participate is only 5% of your gross sales. (If you don’t sell, you don’t pay anything.)

If your company has a pre-packaged product(s), staff of the Division of Marketing will pass out the samples for you during the fair. We recommend that you provide a minimum of 1,500 samples (however, we will distribute any amount that you provide).

Food sampling/selling will be done in the Illinois Department of Agriculture tent (60 ft. x 90 ft.) located on the east side of the fairgrounds (near the Lincoln Stage). Food sampling/selling hours will be 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. each day. Admission onto the fairgrounds and parking are complimentary for participating company representatives. Refrigeration and a food preparation trailer will be available to participating companies at no cost. The tent is located in a “high traffic” area and consumer interest in this area has been very good in past years.

Illinois Products Demonstrations at the Illinois State Fair

Illinois State Fairgrounds
Springfield, Illinois

Within the Heartland area of the Illinois State Fair, the Illinois Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Marketing and Promotion (IDOA, M&P) coordinates the Gazebo area that spotlights Illinois companies and products with cooking demonstrations and subsequent samplings of the prepared recipes. This area has a very transient audience, but the sampling allows time to personally visit with people from all over Illinois about the company and its products. During last year's fair, there were an estimated 250 individuals that viewed each demonstration and sampled the prepared recipe.

The responses from those tasting the products were extremely positive. Most asked where they could purchase the products or get recipes that incorporated the products.

We are looking for Illinois companies that have products that they would like to demonstrate with a recipe or even several recipes and then sample the demonstrated recipe.

The Illinois State Fair is being held on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield from August 10 – 19, 2007. We will have seven scheduled times each day for demonstrations. Available times this year will be: 11 am, Noon, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm, 4 pm and 5 pm.

Another option for companies that cannot send a representative is to have IDOA, M&P staff present the recipe demo and the samples. Your company product would need to be shipped to the Department in plenty of time for preparation. We would also need recipes, brochures, a list of retail outlets where the product is available and other related information to allow for a complete presentation to the audience.

Time slots will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis, so contact Delayne Reeves at 217/524-9129 or delayne.reeves@illinois.gov at your earliest convenience.
