The Illinois EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) Wireless Project is a program providing EBT wireless technology to farmers' market managers to enable acceptance of Link/SNAP (food stamps) in areas of Illinois currently NOT participating in this program. Funding for machine purchase or rental, as well as monthly wireless access fees, are being provided through federal grant funds offered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Additional outreach and educational support is being provided by a partnership of various state agencies and private organizations.
The objective of the Illinois EBT Wireless Project is to increase the number of farmers' markets participating in the Link/SNAP program. Providing this equipment to farmers' markets will further several worthy goals:
- Increasing access to healthy and nutritious food for Link/SNAP participants,
- Aiding farmers by expanding their customer base to include Link/SNAP recipients, and
- Injecting vigor into our local economies.
- In addition, successful implementation and outcomes could lead to additional funding resources to sustain the program on a long term basis.
In order to implement the project, the Office of the Lieutenant Governor has formed a working group that includes representatives from the Illinois Department of Agriculture, Illinois Department of Human Services, Experimental Station, the Illinois Farmers Market Association, and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.
