GOV. BLAGOJEVICH ANNOUNCES ILLINOIS STATE FAIR SURPLUS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

Governor Rod Blagojevich today announced the 2004 Illinois State Fair posted revenues in the black. After bills for the fair were paid, the State Fair Fund had a balance of $82,271, more than $25,000 higher than the balance following the 2003 fair.

For this year’s ARCA RE/MAX series Allen Crowe Memorial 100 Hayes Oil Company – Custom Biker Wear driver Bill Baird from Sturgis, Kentucky took the checkered flag in car #52 while Advance Auto Parts – Pork driver Frank Kimmel in the #46 gave Baird a run for the flag to take second place.

It was a big day for one part of the fair, as lumberjacks raced up standing tree logs, Purina’s Incredible dog team caught Frisbees flying through the air, and fairgoers enjoyed shows in the new amphitheatre of Conservation World at the Illinois State Fair.

IT WAS ALL SMILES ON FUTURE FOR KID'S DAY AT THE ILLINOIS STATE FAIR

There were ribbons for smiling and laughter as Futures for Kid’s Sake Day was marked by a host of youthful competitions not the least of which was the Illinois State Dental Society Smile Contest. Kids weren’t the only ones grinning from ear-to-ear, the annual, and highly competitive Decorated Diaper Contest.

In the last day of harness racing at the Illinois State Fair, the undefeated two-year-old Chevie Cash seemed to be a “lock” for the 15th and final race of the Illinois State Fair. However, just like the weather, things didn’t seem to work out that way.

Governor Rod R. Blagojevich opened the 2004 Illinois State Fair today with the Twilight Parade grand marshals, racecar drivers Donnie Beechler and Justin Allgaier, as well as the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series #22 Caterpillar show car.

FREE FALL RIDE "MEGA DROP" RETURNS TO CARNIVAL MIDWAY

The Mega Drop, a 13-story, extreme free fall ride, popularized at its first appearance during last years fair will be returning as the featured attraction. The Mega Drop ride along with 30 attractions in Carnival Midway area and another 20 in Adventure Village will represent the carnival entertainment.

STATE FAIR TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGES ANNOUNCED

The Illinois Department of Transportation will begin traffic pattern changes for the Illinois State Fair on Thursday, August 12. Traffic around the Illinois State Fairgrounds will be switched to a one-way counterclockwise pattern during the run of the fair.

NBA JAM ROLLS INTO ILLINOIS STATE FAIR

The NBA Jam Van is returning to the Illinois State Fair, offering fans of all ages an authentic NBA experience. Operating from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, the Jam Van features free basketball and interactive activities, including electronic displays and contests as well as a state-of-the-art video wall showcasing the latest NBA action.

The Illinois State Fair’s Special Events Tent, often drawing in the curious fairgoer for one of the many creative and wild contests that are organized, has added more events this year with the new Illinois’ Best Cheerleader Competition and the new Super Stunts Competition. The events are both scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 21.
