HARNESS RACING RECORDS SHATTERED AT ILLINOIS STATE FAIR

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Three harness racing records, including two world records, were set Thursday at the Illinois State Fair.

In the first of the day’s six, $60,000 purse races, Fox Valley Flan became the fastest two-year-old trotting filly bred in Illinois when she captured the State Treasurer Judy Barr Topinka Trophy with a blistering time of 1:56.2. Flan was driven by Andy Miller and trained by his brother, Ervin.

The next race, Kennans Max, driven by C. Jason Dillander and trained by Joel Smith, covered the mile track in 1:55.3, making it the fastest two-year-old trotter bred in the Land of Lincoln, as well as setting a new world record for two-year-old gelding trotters.

A third straight record was set in the thirteenth race when Daniel Waxman’s Uncommon Scents, which also was trained and driven by the Miller brothers, became the fastest female trotter in the history of the Illinois breeding program. She led the pack by almost ten lengths at the finish line, winning with a time of 1:52.4.

The Miller brothers spent a lot of time in the Winner’s Circle this year. Ervin set the record for most victories in the conditioner standings. His sixteen wins broke the old record of fifteen that he set last year and makes this his fifth year at the top of the standings. Andy captured this year’s driving title with seventeen victories.

The final record of the 2003 fair was set in the final race of the day as Chevie Duramax, a two-year-old gelding driven by Anthony Morgan, finished with a time of 1:50.3 to set a world record and become the fastest two-year-old horse bred in Illinois.

Fairgoers’ enthusiasm for the races was reflected by the crowded grandstands and pari-mutuel betting windows, which saw $1,346,306 change hands this year.
