The Class of 2000 was enshrined by the Illinois Department on Aging during ceremonies in the Illinois building at the State Fair. The inductees were selected by a team of impartial judges representing Illinois Aging Network agencies and organizations for achievement in four areas: community service, education, the labor force, and the performance or graphic arts. Tony Perry of Kankakee was inducted in the Community Service category for his leadership of Christmas in April, an organization that improves homes of low income families and the handicapped. Doctor Sheryl Anne Howard Clayton and Charles John Kaiser were both inducted in the Education category. Clayton, a retired educator from East St. Louis, currently teaches adults to read in his free time and takes senior citizens on day trips. "It is a pleasure to me to be a service to anyone in my community," Clayton said. Kaiser, of St. Charles, was a teacher, a coach, and a mentor for 48 years at Oak Park River Forest High School, and he never missed one day of work. He passed away last March. His wife accepted the award on his behalf. Hazel Jones, of Vandalia, was recognized in the Labor Force category. Hazel is the co- host of a local radio talk show, and has started a magazine for seniors named Senior News. F. Stan Jorstad of St. Charles was inducted in the Performance/Graphic Arts category. Strongly influenced by Ansel Adams, he has photographed all 54 national parks and has his photographs on display all over the world. Temperature rose today, and the Illinois State Fair has been combating this with cooling centers located throughout the fairgrounds. The Artisans Building, the Floriculture Display in the Emmerson Building Annex, the Illinois Building/Senior Center, Kids Korner in the South Wing of the Emmerson Building, the Livestock Center, the Old Firehouse Museum, the Orr Building, and Tech Town are all air-conditioned.
