GOVERNOR RYAN OPENS 149th ILLINOIS STATE FAIR

SPRINGFIELD -- With a snip of a ribbon Friday, Governor George H. Ryan and First Lady Lura Lynn Ryan officially opened the 2001 Illinois State Fair. Along with Director of Agriculture Joe Hampton and State Fair Manager Bud Ford, the Ryans then opened the Illinois Artisans Village and Tech Town and toured both the First Lady's and the Governor's tents.

The inaugural day tour of the fairgrounds had a bittersweet moment as Governor Ryan renamed Brown Avenue after Brian Raney, who died of cancer this year at the age of sixteen and had been volunteer at Kids Korner for much of his childhood.

"It is fitting to have this permanent memorial outside the area that Brian was so much a part of," Governor Ryan said. Their visit concluded with lunch at the new Illinois Wine Garden in Agri Expo.

The traditional ribbon cutting at the fair's Main Gate kicked off ten days of agricultural displays and competitions, carnival rides, rodeo, grandstand entertainment and fair food.
