SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – When Jenn Scheitlin was crowned Miss Illinois County Fair Queen, she never imagined the title would involve logrolling. But Scheitlin, an elementary education major at the University of Illinois, demonstrated Wednesday she has more than good looks, she also is a good sport. Scheitlin did not hesitate when asked to compete in the Scheer’s Lumberjack Show at the Illinois State Fair.
Despite her
inexperience, Scheitlin turned in a respectable performance. She scored five points in the ax-throwing
contest, connecting twice with the target in three attempts. She also competed against a seasoned
lumberjack in logrolling, albeit with the aid of a pole to help her keep her
balance. She tried three times but fell
gracefully each time, then playfully pushed her competitor into the water.
Governor Ryan celebrated Governor’s Day at the
Illinois State Fair by touring the fairgrounds. His trip included stops at the purebred Swine Auction and
Conservation World to cheer for Scheitlin as she competed in the lumberjack
show. Attorney General Jim Ryan
attended the harness races at the Grandstand and presented the Attorney
General’s Trophy to Life’s A Holiday, the winner of the day’s fourteenth race,
which had a $60,000 purse. The fifteenth, and final, race of the day also was
for a $60,000 purse, and was won by Diamond Man, a three-year-old colt.
Director of Agriculture Joe Hampton presented the Governor’s Cup to the winner
on behalf of Governor Ryan.
