CENTRALIA ANIMAL DISEASE LABORATORY
What is the Centralia Animal Disease Laboratory? Established
in 1948, the Centralia Animal Disease Laboratory is part of the Illinois
Department of Agriculture. The laboratory provides a variety of
services, including animal disease testing, meat inspection and animal
feed analysis. The facility is located southwest of Kaskaskia College in
Clinton County. Services are available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday
through Friday except state holidays.
What services does the laboratory provide? The
laboratory administers more than 400,000 tests annually. These tests
fall under the following categories: Diagnostic services --Using
modern equipment, staff identify bacteria, viruses, parasites and toxic
substances that pose a threat to livestock and companion animals in
Illinois. Quick identification of diseases or toxins enables
veterinarians or animal owners to administer appropriate remedies. Regulatory
testing -- Staff conduct blood tests to ensure pets and livestock
entered in shows are disease-free and to allow owners to sell and export
animals, embryos and semen worldwide. The lab annually tests more than
200,000 blood samples collected for regulatory purposes as part of
department programs to eradicate pseudorabies in swine, prevent the
re-emergence of brucellosis in cattle and control the spread of equine
infectious anemia in horses. Laboratory technicians also test grain for
mold poisons or residues to meet import requirements of foreign markets. Water
testing -- The Centralia-based laboratory tests water for bacteria
to determine whether it is safe to drink. Samples can be tested for
lead, nitrates, hardness, sulfates, pesticide residues and other
chemicals. Individuals may submit water samples directly but should
contact the laboratory to obtain sterile bottles required for some
testing. Rabies-- Also tested are suspected rabid animals
that have been in contact with pets, livestock or people. Samples for
rabies testing should be submitted only by the animal owner's
veterinarian or county rabies control official. Meats chemistry
-- As part of the department's Meat and Poultry Inspection program, the
lab tests meat and poultry samples for insecticide residues, moisture,
protein, fat, salt, preservatives, extenders (such as soy and cereal
additives), species and bacteria. These tests help ensure consumers
receive wholesome, nutritious products and that they get their money's
worth. Individuals not involved in the department's Meat and Poultry
Inspection program may also submit samples to the lab for testing. Nutritional
analysis -- Laboratory tests enable farmers and pet owners to
evaluate the nutritional value of grains, forages, meat products and
minerals they feed animals. Owners may submit samples for testing. Herbicide
residues -- Analysis of soil samples reveals whether herbicides were
applied correctly or if unusual weather conditions have resulted in
residues that may adversely affect the next crop. Owners may submit soil
samples directly to the lab.
Who may obtain services from the laboratory? Diagnostic
services are available to all Illinois residents. Some services are
available only through the animal owner's veterinarian. The laboratory
also provides testing services for state and federal agencies,
universities, research institutions and other nations through
cooperative agreements.
May I take my animals to the lab for veterinary care or
vaccinations? No, the laboratory does not provide preventive
vaccines or veterinary care. Individuals should contact their
veterinarians for those types of services.
Is there a fee for laboratory services? There
is a fee for most laboratory services. The fee varies depending on the
services provided.
